HINDSIGHT
A photographer/artist friend of mine sent me a number of images thinking
that I might like to utilize them for paintings. I rarely paint from anyone
elses photos, believing that creation must begin and end with the artist.
However, when I saw this photo, it stayed with me. There was something
in the horses eye that I could not forget. In the preliminary sketches
I simplified and balanced the composition. It is painted in pastels with
an intense red underpainting that peeks through in a number of places.
I believe this adds to the intensity in the artwork and also adds a unifying
element of color. The unusual aspect of this piece is that when I first
painted it, I saw a cheeky, intelligent and probably challenging horse
(the original reference photo was actually taken shortly before he was
gelded because he was too much of a handful for his owner). The red underpainting
at this point added tension and little bits of electricity. However, somewhere
in the process of creating this piece a friend looked at it and said she
thought there was a bittersweet and wistful quality to it. She actually
thought is should be titled "Remember Me." After that I found
it difficult to see it any other way and now all I prefer to look at through
sentimental eyes . . . same painting, two viewpoints.
